eBooks, Problem Solving and Creating

Even though we had a short week at school, lots of great activities happened in the Learning Commons. Some classes began to explore the Surrey School District eLibrary collection. There are some great titles available on-line.  Many students have already been given information to take home on how to access the books and we will continue this next week. Access is available through the school library catalogue.

Division 9 continued with their Non-Fiction projects with Mrs. Tracey and were able to upload pages that they created showing their learning about text features. Mrs. Tracey and I collaborated on this activity.  Some work was completed in class, some in the LC and them we worked all together to complete the project. Check out the student blogs at Division 9

Some students in Grades One and Two put on their ‘thinking caps’ this week. We shared and talked about the fairytale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and students problem-solved other ways Jack could have made it up to the castle in the clouds if he didn’t have any magic beans. So fire up your jet powered skateboard, jump into a portal or skydive from a plane. Here are some of their creative solutions:

Getting Ready for Pirate Day, eBooks and Monet

This week in the Learning Commons we have been getting ready for Pirate Day which will be held on Thursday May 15th. Students are invited to wear a shirt with stripes, a belt, a scarf and a ‘scurvy dog’ scowl. We will be meeting our buddy classes in the gym and reading together, watching a short video and singing a pirate song or two. All primary students have made a Pirate hat to wear at the assembly.

‘Let’s Stuff the Learning Commons’ has been a great success. Next week we will take a few photos, blog our pictures and send the toys home at the end of the week on Friday.

Many students in Grade 2 have created  animal research eBooks using My Story App in the Learning Commons. Check out this sample of their great work  “A Moose”

Division 8 began work on making art using the work of Monet as inspiration. Students are using the ProCreate App to blend colours and creating their own ‘impressionist’ art. Next week students will be adding poems to go with their artwork and blogging their creations.

We are Stuffed…and the Pirates are Coming!

We are stuffed with stuffies in the Learning Commons! Students have been claiming ownership of the space by bringing in Plush Toys to decorate. We will leave them on display all next week.

May 15th is Dress Like a Pirate Day at Vanier School. A striped shirt, a pair of boots, a big belt and a scarf and you too can be a pirate! The whole school pirate crew will be buddy reading in the gym.

The Natural Disasters club have begun to get creative with their Tsunami learning. Each student in Division 7, 8 and 9 will be creating an iMovie trailer to gather together all of their blogs, tweets, and art to demonstrate their learning.

Grade 2’s have been using My Story app to make animal eBooks and autobiographical About Me books. Grade 1’s have been learning to use Pic Collage to show their learning about plants and demonstrating an understanding of Beginning Middle and End of a story. Kindergarten has been practising using Drop Box to save their work and Grade 3 have been utilizing the district eLibrary.Yahoo!

Getting a Strong Start in school

This week in the Learning Commons the Strong Start Pre-school came for a special activity morning. We learned all about pigs and showed our learning by creating a pig on a plate and using Magic Paint App. We also were pleased to invite pre-school children and their families to Ready, Set, Learn. We sang some songs and shared some stories. Thank you to all of the families and the visiting Strong Start facilitators who attended.

Some classes used Color Effects App to show the damage caused by natural disasters. We reviewed how to attach an image to a blog post and practiced using the district eBooks. Don’t forget, you can access this collection from your home. See Ms. Crosland if you are unable to access your account or if you have misplaced your password.

Stamp Detectives

It has been another busy week in the Learning Commons. Students and their buddies had lots of fun reading ebooks and storybooks with flashlights in the Pirate’s Den Library. Don’t forget, the digital books are available to all students and their families and can be accessed at home from the school library catalogue. See Ms Crosland if you have any questions about accessing the site.

In the Georges Vanier Learning Commons, students in grades 1 and 2 have been using clues to tell which country a postage stamp is from. They have also been using the iPad camera to document their learning and to figure out how to frame a photograph.

Yes, we have eBooks!

photo-181image

Students at Georges Vanier are learning how to access our new eBook collection. The ‘Follett Shelf eLibrary’ features new titles, old favourites, novels, picture books, easy readers and non-fiction materials. Students are being given their passwords and usernames and a outline of how to access the eBooks on-line at home is being sent home with each student.

Students can ‘check out’ 3 eLibrary books at a time. The books will automatically be made available to other users after 5 days.
