Photography Club: Eyebombing, Evaluating Apps, Blogging

This week in the Learning Commons students began to develop some new skills in photography. Students were given the digital camera to explore outside and search for items they could turn into faces. We will be uploading these to the iPads and digitally manipulating them to create different effects. Here are a couple of great pics.

We also added unique characters to our photography using picture book covers. Some students also experimented with colour filters.

We also gathered together several of our castle creations and are beginning to look critically at the apps we used. Students are looking at what the learning outcomes of the projects are and figuring out if their choice of app helped them to effectively show their learning.

And finally, the Book Fair begins next week and runs from Thursday April 9th to Wednesday April 15th. We are excited to add to our library collection, so if you see any books that might be great for our library please let me know. The fair will be open in the morning for parents and caregivers and their children, throughout the day for students and after school for everyone. I hope to close the fair by 3:15 most days so come early for the best selection. Thank you for the support and see you in the Learning Commons!

Vanier Votes, Explain Everything

This week in the Vanier LC students experimented with Explain Everything app to show their learning. Here’s a sample of their thinking. Great Job.

Students created with Hello Crayon App or practiced using the iPads to take a good photograph and then upload it to DropBox. Some students also imported their work into PicCollage and added text to show their thinking about their favourite Picture Book of the Year.

And, students have voted and the results are in. The Vanier Picture Book of the Year is “That is Not a Good Idea” by Mo Willems. A close second was “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt

And….WooHoo! the Book Fair is coming back to Vanier! The dates are different this time: THURSDAY 9th April to WEDNESDAY 15th April. Hope to see you there!

Picture Book of the Year, Blogging Castles, ‘Love’ Wall

Many primary classes have been reading the nominations for the Surrey School’s Picture Book of the Year. We hope to finish up the stories and complete our voting within the next two weeks. Check out all of the titles here on Teacher Librarian Emiline Downs’ webpage.

Our “What Do You Love?” wall has filled up just in time for Valentine’s Day. Students and staff at Georges Vanier love lots of different things. I was so happy to see “I Love Reading”, “I Love KIndnessCounts”, and “I Love Learning”. We also love lots of sports, games, candy and most importantly, our families and the people who take care of us.

Designing Castles, Classroom Trophies, Global Play Day, Our Love Wall

This week in the Learning Commons we have been showing what we have learned about castle design and structure. Students included features such as a keep, arrow slits, crenellations, a gatehouse and a well in their creations. Next we will be looking at designing castles in more detail to include features of medieval life. Check out this great video showing their work.

The #KindnessCounts trophy in the LC has been a great success. Each class now has their own ‘designer’ trophy or rosette to help continue thinking about kindness in the classroom.

We participated in Global School Play Day on Feb 4th. Students created, shared, problem solved, imagined, laughed, deciphered, communicated, were kind and cleaned up together. Read more about it here

Our ‘What Do You Love?’ wall is beginning to take shape. Students are asked to contribute by thinking about, ‘What makes your heart sing?’, ‘What brings you joy?’ The answers are wonderful. Come on by the LC for a marker and help celebrate the things and people we love.

Virtual Castles, AppSmashed Anti-Bullying Posters and #KindnessCounts

This week students have been showing their learning about castles and creating their own virtual structures, incorporating the defensive design features of medieval castles. We are using a free app called Castle Builder – Minecraft style – that allows the students to view their creations in 3D.

We have also begun our Pink Shirt Day promotions. Students in Ms. Dhaliwal’s and Mrs. Lutz’s class created graphics that they will be posting on their student blogs to help spread the word about Anti-Bullying. We created images in Chalkboard App and imported them into Comic Book App to add quotes and pizazz.

Exploring design, Books of the Year, #KindnessCounts

This week we figured out that one whole division can fit into our co-operatively designed castle. We also explored castle design with a variety of websites. Next week we will try our hand at creating a ‘virtual castle’.

Other students have also been enjoying the nominations for the Surrey Schools’ Picture Book of the Year. Check out Spike:Ugliest Dog in the Universe by Debra Frasier. Spike’s message fits in perfectly with our #KindnessCounts ideas; A kind heart is a beautiful thing. We also enjoyed  The Black Rabbit by Philippa Leathers, and loved Michael Hall’s It’s an Orange Aardvark which was great fun to read aloud.
