In the Vanier LC we build Digital Citizenship skills into each on-line activity. Today we began to focus on creating selfies using Hello Crayon App and a full length mirror and we will be discussing when it is appropriate to post a self-photo on line. The activity was completed in a 40 minute prep with book circulation with a Grade 3 class. Continue reading
This week we have been focusing on a review of internet safety. Digital Citizenship is built into our everyday use of the internet but this week we discussed safety again specifically. Twitter is not just for finding out what’s new with your favourite entertainer! At Vanier, staff and students use twitter to share our ideas, to learn from others and to celebrate our learning. Follow us on twitter @crosland_a @georgesvanier36 @VanierLC and join the party! Check with your child’s classroom teacher for their Twitter @name and explore another way to join in your child’s learning. Here are some tweets that have come up in the last few days.
We have been incorporating discussions about Digital Citizenship into our lessons in the Learning Commons. Digital Citizenship is the ability to use technology in an appropriate, productive and responsible way. There is lots of very detailed information available. Our school wanted to create an ‘umbrella’ statement that would incorporate many facets of learning to use technology effectively. We are using the language ‘Digital Citizenship: There’s an APP for that’. Here’s the mini poster we will be hanging in every classroom.

What a super week it has been at Georges Vanier. Along with celebrating Diwali, we celebrated some great learning. Students in some divisions have begun to blog their learning. They have been able to think about how to take a good photograph, crop it and upload to their own student blog. We also began to talk about how to leave a constructive and positive comment. Check them out: Division 7, Division 9
We also had 30 Geronimo Stilton fans each win a GS book. Yahoo!
Students in the Vanier Learning Commons have their own Twitter account. Follow us @VanierLC to see what we are up to. Here’s a sample:
Take a look at these great reading areas in the Vanier Learning Commons. It’s enough to make you want to snuggle up and read a book!
This week we were pleased to host the Strong Start program for some fun activities with the pre-schoolers and their families. We read some stories, we counted, we sang and we shared puzzles on the iPads. Yahoo!
Be impressed! These Grade 1 and 2 students are learning to independently digitally show their learning. Students were able to locate apps, use in-app cameras to take a selfie, design a knights helmet (complete with the king’s colours), export to the camera roll and upload to Dropbox. Great work.
