Because of Books…

Natural Disasters Readers Club ’13 from Anna Crosland on Vimeo.

Students in Grade 4 and 4/5 classes at Georges Vanier Elementary participated in a lunchtime club. Our focus was on “I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005” by Lauren Tarshis. Approximately 75 students read the novel, both as a group and independently. We explored the nature and causes of hurricanes, the resulting devastation, global warming and recycling.

Students used apps to explore hurricanes, learned about other countries through a postage stamp club, designed and painted T Shirts and blogged their learning. Each student created a 10 page book “Because of Books…” in which they shared their favourite stories, character quotes, illustrated non-fiction facts, created avatars and encouraged their peers to read. The books were professionally printed and bound for each student to keep. In addition, a compilation hard cover volume was produced and add to the Learning Commons.

This video was shown at a school assembly where students shared their learning and showed off their T Shirts. A movie and pizza feast completed the project.
